Caterpillar Inc. also known as "CAT", is an American company which operates in designing, manufacturing and selling construction & mining tools, diesel & natural gas engines also industrial gas turbines. Caterpillar Inc. also sells financial instruments and insurance to clients worldwide through an organized dealer network. Caterpillar Inc. is having assets more than US$70 billion and is ranked number 1 in its business and was ranked 44 in 2009 Fortune 500. Caterpillar Inc. intermittently separate from assets that do not align with its core competencies apart from that the revenue generated from sales of its core products which was invested for acquisitions which played an important part in Caterpillar's growth. Caterpillar Inc. came into existence in the year 1925 when the merger of Holt Manufacturing Company and the C. L. Best Tractor Company took place resulted into a complete a new unit, which is none other than California based Caterpillar Tractor Company. Although in the year 1986, the company restructured itself as a Delaware corporation keeping the same name, Caterpillar Inc. Caterpillar's headquarters are located in Peoria, Illinois, United States. It is one of the integral components of Dow Jones Industrial Average & S&P 500.
 
Caterpillar Inc. constructed its first Russian facility in Tosno near St. Petersburg, Russia which took a time of 16 months because of the severe winter conditions and got completed in November 1999. First electrical substation was built in the Leningrad Oblast from the time when the Communist government was dissolved on December 26, 1991. Caterpillar is manufacturing equipments in Brazil since 1960. In 2010 the company made announcements to expand manufacturing of backhoe and small wheel loaders with a new factory. The $125M Caterpillar Suzhou, People's Republic of China facility, produces loaders and motorgraders targeting Asian market. The first machine is scheduled for production in March 2009. URS Ausino, in San Francisco, California, administers facility construction.The company offers technology that is utilized for purposes like construction, transportation, logistics, mining, forestry, energy, electronics, financing and electric power production. Caterpillar machineries can be easily identifiable by its trademark "Caterpillar Yellow" livery along with the "CAT" logo.
 
Caterpillar works in 3 sectors mainly: Machinery, Engines and Financial Products. The Machinery line of business consists of the designing and manufacturing part which is further associated with marketing and sale of construction, mining and forestry equipments such as tractors, loaders, excavators, tunnel boring & mining equipment etc. The Engines line of business consist of designing and manufacturing along with marketing and sale of engines for caterpillar machinery, marine,  industrial, agricultural and other applications and related parts. The Financial Products line business offers a variety of financing instruments to their clients and dealer for Caterpillar machinery & engines turbines, marine vessels and related equipments.

The company came into existence as a result of the merger of the Holt Manufacturing Company and the C. L. Best Tractor Company, in 1925 thereby forming a new entity, the Caterpillar Tractor Company. The reorganization of the company took place in 1986 as Delaware corporation under the current name, Caterpillar Inc.
