FIAT pulls out 5,3 million vehicles due to cruise control defect

Automaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV plans to recall more than 5,3 million vehicles (built between 2014 and 2018) in North America due to an error in cruise control system. The company called on vehicle owners not to activate the system before upgrading the software. The recalled cars cover 4,8 million in the U.S and 490,000 in Canada.

Fiat stated there were no incidents or injuries related to that defect. But, the company said it had one report of a driver in the U.S driving Dodge Journey who could not deactivate the cruise control.

The report was received by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on March 2, 2018. Fiat did not specify the recall cost. But NHTSA asked vehicle owners to obey the warning not to use cruise control until fixed.

Among vehicles being pulled out include the Chrysler 300, Chrysler 200, Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Journey, Dodge Durango, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler and Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks and Ram 3500/4500/5500 cab chassis trucks.

The Italian-American carmaker will recall several additional vehicles in Mexico and other markets. Because some Fiat Fremont calls being manufactured with the same platform as the Dodge Journey. The total numbers of vehicles affected globally are not known yet.

In 2015, Fiat paid $175 million penalties to the U.S regulator over safety lapses issue.
