Unilever tells Google and Facebook to drain “the swamp”

The era of digital gives people a freedom to express their opinion about everything. But, the presence of social media platforms enables people to spread fake and extremist content.

Unilever is committed to combating false contents circulated on social media. The Dove soap maker even will report Alphabet and Facebook the police if both tech titans cannot stop the circulation of illegal and extremist contents.

"We need to redefine what is a responsible business in the digital age because for all of the good the tech companies are doing, there are some unintended consequences that now need addressing," Keith Weed, chief marketing officer at Unilever , said Monday as CNBC wrote.

Weed criticizes tech firms for creating a space or”swamp” for fake news, enabling illicit news pieces to be circulated.

Unilever ’s spending on advertising reached $9.4 billion in 2017.

War against fake news

The worrying widespread of fake information attracts the world’s leaders’ attention. In the World Economic Forum (WEF) summit in Davos, Switzerland last month, U.K Primer Minister Theresa May said investors had to pressure on tech companies to respond quickly to tackle inaccurate contents posted on social networks.

Alphabet and Facebook have shown their commitment to combating the circulation of illicit posts. The former stated it will deploy over 10,000 staff to monitor and block extremists contents on YouTube. Facebook said it will use artificial intelligence to detect information, pics related to hate speech and terrorism.

The investment in digital media has surged over 60 percent over the last five years. While investment in creating conventional media platforms has dropped 35 percent.

Both Facebook and Alphabet are estimated to control half of online ad revenue and 60 percent only in the U.S in 2017, data from eMarketer revealed.
