Roku funnels efforts toward original content, with Roku Channel in focus

Roku wants more unique content

  • Roku is making some relatively under-the-radar moves toward more original content, while it keeps navigating the skyrocketing world of online video as one of the key gatekeepers of programming.
  • As Variety notes, the company has a new head of unscripted content for the Roku Channel: Former Quibi exec Brian Tannenbaum. And that makes four ex-Quibi employees who have joined Roku in key content roles, after Ryan Bocskay joined to lead production business affairs, Colin Davis to join scripted programming and Luis Gomm Santos joining as a content acquisition associate.
  • That of course follows Roku jumping on the rights to Quibi's multimillion-dollar portfolio of programming following the implosion of the short-form video service just six months after launch. Roku reportedly paid "significantly less" than $100M for Quibi's library, which it decided to stream for free on the Roku Channel.
  • Ahead of that Quibi launch, the company says a new scripted series, Cypher, will premiere exclusively on the Roku Channel March 19. The company expects it will be streamed by millions of engaged viewers.
  • MoffettNathanson cut its price target on the stock on Monday, noting that future success is dependent on the Roku Channel - it believes the service contributes 65% of video advertising revenues today - but pointing out that pivoting to solid competition in ad-supported video on demand is an expensive proposition.

Over the current book year the total revenue will be 2.56 billion USD (consensus estimates). This is rather significant more than 2020's revenue of 1.78 billion USD.
