Blackstone invests $250M for majority stake in Indian online learning platform

  • In an effort to accelerate online education and digital skills delivery, Blackstone (NYSE:BX) invests $250M for a majority stake in the Bengaluru-based online digital skilling platform, Simplilearn, as India's edtech sector accelerates from the pandemic, The Times of India reports, citing people familiar with the matter.
  • Blackstone's first private equity investment in Asia's and India's consumer tech space values Simplilearn at $400M, according to TOI. It's acquiring takes from Kalaari, Helion, and Mayfield Fund that had invested $28M in the online learning company.
  • Blackstone confirms the agreement to acquire a majority stake in Simplilearn, but doesn't disclose the financial terms.
  • Simplilearn will use the funding to expand into the U.S. and Europe and form partnerships with global universities; over the next 12-18 months, it will double the number of its employees to 3,000, and it will buy back employee stock options that would benefit ~100 employees, TOI reports, citing people familiar with the matter.
  • Simplilearn supports early to mid-career professionals acquire a variety of digital skills. It has 200K paid users and its free learning platform SkillUp aims to add 5M users by 2023, according to TOI.
  • The private equity group has $50B invested in India thus far, including IT firm Mphasis, Piramal Glass, and another edtech player Aakash Educational Services, which was recently acquired by BYJU'S for ~$1B.

    Over the current book year the company from New York City could achieve a revenue around 8.95 billion USD (consensus estimates). This is hugely more than 2021's revenue of 6.1 billion USD.
