Physicians Need to Fight for the Cause of America, Writes President of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS)

TUCSON, Ariz., Aug. 31, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On the 250th anniversary of our Declaration of Independence, the need for physicians to fight for the Cause of America is increasingly urgent, writes George L. Smith, III, M.D., in the fall issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Smith practices family medicine in Covington, Georgia, and serves as President of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS).

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) won Democratic primary elections in New York, California, Maine, and Colorado recently. The DSA platform calls for radical changes in the structure of the U.S. government, and policies that include universal socialized medicine. Dr. Smith writes that “socialized medicine has historically been proven to be substandard, dehumanizing, cruel, and purposefully underfunded.”

To pay for this “free” medical care, DSA proposes to tax “the wealthy.” Dr. Smith juxtaposes this to a quotation from the first major pamphlet of the resolute patriot movement, “The Right of the British Colonies Asserted and Proved.” This 1764 pamphlet by Massachusetts Assembly leader James Otis, Jr., declared: “No MAN AG can take my property from me without my consent; if he does, he deprives me of my liberty and makes me a slave.”

Quoting John Adams, Dr. Smith states that the American Revolution took place in the minds and hearts of the people. “A radical Change in the Principles, Opinions, Sentiments, and Affections of the People” was the real American Revolution.

We are now experiencing radical changes at an intense pace, Dr. Smith points out. Pied pipers are enticing people with a melody destructive of our founding principles of freedom. Our freedom will not survive through our complacency, or naivety, but only through our recognition that this is a major Frontline political battle in a war for our country.

As Thomas Paine wrote in Common Sense, in our nation’s fight against tyranny, oppression, and destruction, “The Cause of America is in great Measure the Cause of all Mankind.” Dr. Smith urges physicians to dedicate themselves to the fight.

The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons is published by the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), a national organization representing physicians in all specialties since 1943.
