Royal Vopak is a Dutch company that is mostly involved in the handling and storage of chemicals, gas related products and edible oils. The company was created after the merging agreement of Pakhoed and Van Ommeren in 1999. The company’s main areas of operations are based in Rotterdam and is also among the companies listed on the AEX index of Euronext Amsterdam.
Before Pakhoed and Van Ommeren decided to work together, both of them were already providing an almost similar services to their customers. Pakhoed offered the distribution of chemical products in his company called Univar while Van Ommeren offered transportation service for heavy goods in his company that was known as Dockwise.
The union of Dockwise and Univer was canceled by the European Commission due to the fear of larger market power that Vopak Company would gain in storage service sector in Antwerp-Rotterdam-Amsterdam (ARA) location. After the negotiations with European Commission, the two companies agreed to sell some of their terminals.
In 2000 Vopak announced that they had sold one of their terminals, Botlek to Odfjell one of their major competitor. As a result of inadequate capital and finances, Vopak ended up selling its distribution services to Univar.
