Humacyte Presents Advances in Whole-Lung Engineering

  • Laboratory and pre-clinical models of whole-lung engineering inform roadmap for building a functional lung alveolus, which is the key building block for making a functional lung
  • Data presented at 38th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Association for Chest Surgery

DURHAM, N.C., May 21, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Humacyte, Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology platform company developing universally implantable bioengineered human tissue at commercial scale, today shared new findings from laboratory and pre-clinical models supporting the potential to engineer functional airsacs in the lung, which are the key elements for engineering a whole functional lung organ.

The findings demonstrate that single-cell gene expression data point to cell-cell communication in the lung alveolus, a key finding that may help to engineer functional lung tissues in the future. Future pre-clinical studies will aim to identify the interactions that are most important for critical alveolar cell functions, and to determine the degree of functionality of these engineered lung segments.

“These findings are encouraging, as they suggest that there is the potential to engineer a functional lung alveolus,” said Laura Niklason, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of Humacyte. “We now have better insight into cell-to-cell interactions within the engineered alveolar niche – an important next step in the development of engineered lung systems. In the very long term, this work could underpin the production of whole engineered lungs, which could be lifesaving for tens of thousands of patients every year suffering from end-stage lung disease.”

Dr. Niklason continued, “End-stage lung disease has few therapeutic options and transplantation is severely limited by the availability of transplantable donor organs. Engineered whole lungs may have the potential to provide lifesaving therapy for patients with end-stage lung disease, at some point in the future. These findings represent progress toward identifying and understanding design criteria that are essential for functional success of engineered lung airsacs, or alveoli.”

On February 17, 2021, Alpha Healthcare Acquisition Corp. (Nasdaq: AHAC) (“AHAC”), a special purpose acquisition company, and Humacyte announced the execution of a definitive business combination agreement along with a fully committed $175 million PIPE financing agreement.

About Humacyte
Humacyte, Inc., is developing a disruptive biotechnology platform to deliver universally implantable bioengineered human tissues and organs designed to improve the lives of patients and transform the practice of medicine. The Company develops and manufactures acellular tissues to treat a wide range of diseases, injuries and chronic conditions. Humacyte’s initial opportunity, a portfolio of human acellular vessels (HAVs), is currently in late-stage clinical trials targeting multiple vascular applications, including vascular trauma repair, arteriovenous access for hemodialysis, and peripheral arterial disease. Pre-clinical development is also underway in coronary artery bypass grafts, pediatric heart surgery, treatment of type 1 diabetes, and multiple novel cell and tissue applications. Humacyte’s HAVs were the first product to receive the FDA’s Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT) expedited review designation and received priority designation for the treatment of vascular trauma by the U.S. Secretary of Defense.
