SEB Greentech VC invests in an AI optimisation company

SEB Greentech VC invests in Sweden-based Embedl, a company that develops technology to make embedded AI models more efficient without sacrificing intelligence.

“Embedl has recently gained commercial traction within automotive, defense and robotics in both the US and Europe, such as Bosch and Kodiak Robotics, confirming the unique capabilities of their technology,” says Kristina Söderberg, Investment Manager at SEB Greentech VC.

She says the new funding will support the company’s expansion into key markets and accelerate the development of their product, as well as a community platform called Embedl Hub.”

According to Kristina Söderberg, Embedl’s energy-saving capabilities and hardware-agnostic approach set it apart. Embedl’s software works seamlessly across chip vendors, giving customers the flexibility to switch to more cost-effective hardware without sacrificing performance.

Embedl’s main product, the proprietary Model Optimisation SDK, acts like “brain surgery” for AI models, removing redundancies and tailoring them for efficient deployment on resource-constrained devices. This enables AI to run locally on hardware like autonomous vehicles, drones, and industrial robots, reducing energy needs and reliance on energy-intensive cloud computing.

By using Embedl’s technology, developers can:
- Cut energy usage by up to 83 per cent - Reduce memory requirements by up to 95 per cent
- Achieve inference speeds up to 18x faster
- Save up to 90 per cent of development time

SEB Greentech VC, Fairpoint Capital, and Spintop Ventures are leading the 5.5-million-euro investment round, which positions Embedl to scale its platform globally to the automotive, robotics, and defence sectors.

“We are thrilled to have the backing and support of Sweden’s best deep tech investors. Now, we will accelerate our global presence and cement our position as the leading provider of efficient AI technology,” Hans Salomonsson, CEO and Co-Founder at Embedl.

Embedl has recently been listed as one of the most promising startups by CB Insights’ AI 100 List, won the IVA Smart Industry 2024 Award and been featured in Ny Teknik 33-listan. The company was born out of Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. The investment in Embedl marks SEB Greentech VC’s thirteenth investment.
